New European Bauhaus

Sixth EU Mission Dedicated to New European Bauhaus

On 19 July 2023, the European Commission proposed a sixth Horizon Europe Mission dedicated entirely to the New European Bauhaus (NEB).

The announcement was made on the same day that the European Commission published its assessment on the other existing five EU Missions – Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change; Cancer Mission; Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission; Restore our Ocean and Waters Mission; and Soil Mission –, indicating that these are all on track to meet their 2030 ambitions towards a greener and healthier Europe.

By consolidating the initiative into a dedicated EU Mission, and if endorsed by the Member States, the European Commission pretends to provide more structure to the NEB and mobilise public and private actors to pool the necessary resources and spread the initiative across the whole European continent.

Launched in 2020, the NEB is an initiative focused on research and innovation solutions to transform neighbourhoods across Europe into enriching, sustainable, and inclusive places. During its first two years of implementation, the NEB has gained significant traction, inspiring several projects and counting with the buy-in of several well-known figures in the worlds of architecture, design, sustainability, and culture, as well as several EU programmes.
