ESEIA Annual Report 2023

ESEIA Publishes Its Annual Report 2023

The ESEIA Annual Report 2023 is out now! The report provides a comprehensive overview of the organisation, its accomplishments and activities in her 14th year of operation.

The de-fossilisation of our societies for achieving climate neutrality is a global endeavour that requires international collaboration. In 2023, ESEIA remained committed to facilitating interdisciplinary and trans-sectoral cooperation. ESEIA provided great opportunities for ESEIA experts to share knowledge and work together in nine R&I proposals to address biorefineries, hydrogen from feedstock, novel biofuels from biogenic residues and wastes, solar energy production on farms, water-food-energy nexus systems, digital twins for sustainable management of buildings, and developing materials for energy harvesting, storage, and conversion.

In 2023, ESEIA was successful in securing funding for two new projects, EMERGE and INITIATE, thanks to the University of Zagreb – Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture Team headed by Goran Krajačić.

The successful proposals answer directly to the three core aims of ESEIA. They are cutting edge as they are conceptually building on nexus innovation systems. They equally contribute to capacity-building and foster international partnerships in different regions of the African Union and the Widening countries.

2023 also marked the completion of the RE4Industry project that was launched in 2020 with the goal of facilitating a smooth and more secure transition to the adoption of renewable energies for the energy-intensive industry (EII) sector in Europe. Among the project’s many achievements was the publication of the RE4Industry Brochure, offering insight into the work carried out in the framework of the project, including three industrial case studies, and the RE4Industry Industrial FORA Report, representing a vision for decarbonisation of EIIs.

Additionally, capacity building was integral to ESEIA’s activities in 2023, with nine Education and Training events (six ESEIA Lectures, two RE4Industry Knowledge Transfer Seminars, and the ESEIA International Summer School) organised in cooperation with its members and partners, providing a platform for learning, networking and innovation and benefitting 350+ students, young scientists and professionals from 10+ countries.

Furthermore, the Annual Report 2023 provides insight into the organisation’s strategic growth (ESEIA continued its outreach efforts for membership enlargement while enhancing the membership experience for its current members), partnership development (ESEIA explored opportunities to build upon existing partnerships and create synergies at a global level by starting a new EU-funded project, EMERGE, engaging in joint project proposals and numerous events with EPNOE or introducing the organisation at events such as the 6th China Forum) and enhanced communication efforts (ESEIA continued to solidify its online presence and engage a growing community of followers on social media platforms). In this report, you will also find information on ESEIA’s organisational structure and financial performance in the past year.

Looking forward, ESEIA has started a new project called New ESEIA_34, aiming to expand its impact and initiatives and succeed in the next EU Framework Programme 10 (FP10) for R&I. This project is strategically designed to bring numerous benefits to ESEIA members, among which an enriched environment to network and collaborate on innovative projects, maximising their research impact.

The Annual Report 2023 will be on the agenda of the next ESEIA General Assembly Meeting that will be held 14 March 2024 in a hybrid format, allowing in-person (Brussels) or virtual participation (Zoom).
