ESEIA Announces the 20th Lecture: Bioresources Utilization. Sustainable Aviation Fuels

How can bioresources support aviation decarbonisation without competing with food production or natural ecosystems? The 20th ESEIA Lecture, “Bioresources Utilization: Sustainable Aviation Fuels”, will explore this question on 3 December 2026, from 19.00 to 21.00 CET, online. Registration is now open.

Organised by ESEIA and TU Graz in cooperation with the ToFuel project, the lecture will connect research and industrial perspectives on the development and scale-up of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

From Bioresources to Sustainable Aviation Fuels

Aviation is responsible for over 2% of global CO₂ emissions, and decarbonising it remains challenging. SAF offer a promising near-term solution, but their wider deployment raises questions about feedstock availability, environmental impacts and commercial viability.

The lecture will examine key conversion technologies, lifecycle emissions and the economic realities of scaling up. It will also explore the policy frameworks and innovation ecosystems needed to move SAF from pilot projects to commercial reality.

The EU ToFuel project, which develops pathways to convert tomato waste into SAF, will provide a concrete example of regional circular bioresource utilisation.

Research and Industry Perspectives

The invited lecture will be delivered by Dusita De Hoop, Senior R&D Analyst at SkyNRG, the Netherlands. Responses will be provided by Katja Patzsch, Head of the Innovation Field Industrial Biotechnology at Fraunhofer IGB, Germany, and Giorgio Lecchi, Industrial Director at Mutti S.p.A., Italy.

The event will be chaired by Markus Lehner, Head of Chair, Process Technology & Industrial Environmental Protection at Montanuniversität Leoben, Austria, and hosted by Andrea Höglinger, Vice-Rector for Research at TU Graz, Austria. The lecture concept is developed by Brigitte Hasewend, ESEIA Director.
