Updates from ESEIA EU-Funded Projects
ESEIA continues to play an active role in European research and innovation initiatives supporting the energy transition and international cooperation. Through its involvement in EU-funded projects like INITIATE and EMERGE, ESEIA contributes to strengthening collaboration between research institutions, policymakers, and industry while promoting knowledge exchange and capacity building across Europe and beyond. Below are the latest updates from the two ongoing projects.
INITIATE Project Update
Following the successful implementation of nine R&I and Policy labs across Skopje, Lisbon, and Zagreb in 2025, ESEIA is currently analyzing the outcomes of these labs. This evaluation will provide essential input for policy recommendations and a strategic roadmap for R&I uptake, while establishing a framework for future replication. As we move through 2026, the project is proud to scale its impact by launching new replicator labs in Cyprus, Belgrade, Romania, and Ukraine. In parallel, INITIATE is collaborating with ESEIA Lecture Series, centered on the topic of jobs for the green transition. This lecture will feature expert insights from Fabio Montagnino from Cyprus Institute (CYI), who will represent the project and explore the evolving professional landscape. Learn more.

EMERGE Project Update
ESEIA is currently preparing an exciting hackathon to be held in conjunction with the 3rd EMERGE physical General Assembly in Maputo, Mozambique. Designed as a multi-stage initiative, the hackathon will begin with three mini-hackathons (one in each pilot region: Mali, the Niger Basin, and Mozambique) bringing together local talent and ideas, before moving to a final event in Mozambique, where the top two teams from each pilot will come together to present their solutions. The rewards focus is on meaningful, career-enhancing opportunities, including mentorship, incubation support, and visibility within the project ecosystem. Notably, ESEIA is contributing by offering conference attendance as a prize, reinforcing the link between innovation, collaboration, and real-world impact.
By connecting local innovation efforts with an international stage, the hackathon is set to become a dynamic space for collaboration, learning, and exchange, culminating in Maputo as part of the project’s broader engagement with stakeholders across Africa and Europe.
