EU-AU Collaboration in Focus at the 12th ESEIA Lecture on Innovative Energy System Modelling for Sustainable Future
On 5 December 2024, ESEIA hosted the 12th ESEIA Lecture: Energy System Modelling in EU and AU in its renowned series, “Sustainable Energy Innovation Systems for Climate Neutrality.” The online event brought together 43 participants from 20 organisations in 18 countries, 12 European of which 7 were from INITIATE HORIZON EUROPE PROJECT and 6 AU from Ethiopia, Cape Verde, Morocco, Mozambique, and Nigeria – showcasing expert insights into the transformative potential of energy system modelling for advancing sustainable energy and resource management in both the European Union and African Union contexts.
The session featured distinguished speakers and respondents:
- Invited Lectures by: Philippe Schild, Senior Expert, European Commission, BE, and Nanko Madu, Director of Programmes, Afrilabs, NG, delivered the invited lecture, offering insights into EU-Africa cooperation for the Green Transition.
- Response 1: Francesco Roncallo from EnGreen (EMERGE Project), IT, and Smail Zouggar from UMP (EMERGE Project), MA, provided responses emphasizing the EMERGE project’s innovative contributions.
- Response 2: Ingeborg Graabak from SINTEF (OpenMod4Africa Project), NO, gave a second response showcasing OpenMod4Africa’s potential to transform energy systems across African regions.
The event was chaired by Goran Krajacic, UZagreb-FSB, HR, with ESEIA Director Brigitte Hasewend hosting.
The lecture highlighted the power of energy system modelling tools in mapping and transforming energy systems for a cleaner, more sustainable future. Through the case studies of EMERGE and OpenMod4Africa, attendees gained a deeper understanding of how data-driven approaches guide strategic decision-making, foster collaboration, and enable resilient energy solutions tailored to specific local needs.
The lecture underscored the importance of EU-AU collaboration in research and innovation, offering a platform for knowledge exchange and partnership development.
