ESEIA International Summer School 2023: Linking Theory to Practice
The ESEIA International Summer School 2023, dedicated to Green Hydrogen Solutions for Climate Friendly Energy Production, was successfully held from 25 September to 6 October 2023. With a total of 25 participants, this year’s edition was hosted online by Savonia University of Applied Sciences (Savonia UAS) in Finland.
The summer school aimed to enhance knowledge of different green hydrogen solutions and facilitate networking among international participants. Additionally, it aimed to provide a better understanding of what it takes to create a successful EU proposal.
The two-week programme included lectures, mentoring, group projects and presentations, attracting 25 students, mostly from Austrian and Finnish universities. The lectures were delivered by a diverse group of speakers, including:
- academics from organising and partner universities such as Savonia UAS, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, LUT University, University of Eastern Finland;
- industry experts from companies acting on energy markets and focusing on climate-friendly solutions such as Hycamite, WestEnergy, Gasgrid Finland, Wega, Sumitomo SHI FW, Carbon ReUseFinland, Q Power, Convion, P2X Solutions and U-Cont.
While half of the participants successfully expanded their knowledge of green hydrogen solutions through lecture attendance alone, the other half engaged in group work by preparing a preliminary research plan for calls for proposals under Horizon Europe.
The proposals created by students explored the development of innovative electrolysis cells, alternative heating systems for industry utilising waste heat from electrolysers, gasification of wood wastes for methanol synthesis, and CCU for methanol production. The next step is to further develop these proposals into final project plans tailored to suitable calls under Horizon Europe or other funding programmes in close cooperation with all willing organisations.
By linking theory to practice, the ESEIA International Summer School 2023, organised by North Savo Energy Cluster’s partners in Finland and ESEIA’s network in Europe, has equipped the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to the development of sustainable energy solutions. The next edition of the ESEIA International Summer School will take place from 16-27 September 2024.
