Key Insights from the 19th SDEWES Conference: Paving the Way for Sustainable Development

The 19th SDEWES Conference, held from 8 to 12 September 2024 in Rome, Italy, brought together 690 scientists, researchers, and experts in sustainable development from 62 countries across six continents. Among them were participants from ESEIA Member UNIZAG FSB, who were actively involved in the event. Read the report and learn more about the key messages from the conference.

Some of the key messages from the conference would be:

  • PV is expected to become leading electricity producer in the future with significant rise in installed photovoltaic capacities. When considering the overall ongoing and planned installed photovoltaic capacities and considering their lifetime, the recycling of photovoltaics becomes an issue that needs carefully to be approached.
  • More focus should be given on local climate change effects like urban heat islands, both to their modelling and to advanced urban heat mitigation strategies, such as radiative cooling materials, from a human-centric perspective.
  • Circular economy provides a sustainable approach that minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency, a departure from the linear economy’s emphasis on exchange value and growth, but is the holistic approach was often overshadowed by focus only on recycling.
