Member News | ADENE Brings Energy Literacy Training to Mozambique
ESEIA member ADENE – Agência para a Energia has delivered the first edition of the “Rota da Energia em Moçambique” programme in partnership with Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in Maputo. It is the first time the initiative has been held outside Portugal, and a concrete example of the Europe–Africa collaboration that runs through ESEIA’s own work.
The programme is designed around a multiplier model. Rather than ending with the training itself, the participating students will go on to deliver awareness sessions in secondary schools, applying what they learned and carrying energy literacy into the wider school community. The initiative is explicitly aimed at creating a new generation of ambassadors for energy efficiency and sustainability in Mozambique.
The Maputo edition puts into effect a collaboration protocol signed between ADENE and UEM in October 2025, set out to advance energy and water efficiency in Mozambique, with a focus on building the capacity of technicians, students and local communities, as well as on public and university buildings.
The Maputo training sits at the intersection of two strands of ESEIA’s own work.
ADENE, based in Lisbon, is a member of the Alliance and a national energy agency whose mandate spans energy efficiency, water efficiency and sustainable mobility. Universidade Eduardo Mondlane is a partner in the EMERGE project, the Horizon Europe initiative on Africa–Europe energy cooperation for which ESEIA leads dissemination and communication.
The themes are the same ones the Alliance is addressing this autumn. The 19th ESEIA Lecture – Energy System Modelling for Green Africa (8 October 2026) examines what sustainable, inclusive and resilient energy transitions require in African contexts, including the gap between technical outputs and practical implementation. The EMERGE Final Event takes place in Lisbon on 23 November as part of the 7th ESEIA Conference, hosted by fellow ESEIA member LNEG.
ESEIA congratulates ADENE and Universidade Eduardo Mondlane on the first edition and looks forward to seeing the Rota da Energia PALOP extend across the Portuguese-speaking African countries.
