University of Twente Leads EU-Wide Effort to Accelerate Industrial Circularity
The University of Twente, a proud ESEIA member, is coordinating the Horizon Europe project IS2H4C – Sustainable Circular Economy Transition: From Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity. Running from 2024 to 2028, this ambitious initiative is redefining how Europe’s industrial regions approach decarbonization, resource efficiency, and circular economy implementation.
Under the leadership of Dr. Devrim Murat Yazan, Associate Professor at the IEBIS Department, IS2H4C aims to scale up industrial symbiosis into full-fledged Hubs for Circularity (H4Cs)—digitally enabled, cross-sector ecosystems that integrate renewable energy, carbon capture, hydrogen production, and water reuse technologies. The project is active across four demonstration hubs in the Netherlands, Spain, Turkey, and Norway, and is developing a replicable framework for circular industrial innovation that aligns with the European Green Deal and the Circular Economy Action Plan.
In a recent interview for the Sustainable Energy Insight – ESEIA blog, Devrim Yazan, Project Coordinator, Utwente, NL, shared how IS2H4C bridges technological innovation with societal engagement and policy support to transform isolated efforts into systemic change.
