DESCRIPTION:Topic: Circular Bioeconomy Start-Up Villages: From Idea to MarketGuest lecture by Evelyn Reinmuth\, UNI Hohenheim\, DEResponse 1: Melina Philippou\, Representative of start-up village Kalopanayiotis\, CYResponse 2: Annalisa Spalazzi\, Regional Science and Economic Geography\, GSSIChair: Fabio Montagnino\, Cyprus Institute\, CYI\, CYHost: Rector TU Graz\, ESEIA Vice-President \n\n\n\nRural areas in Europe struggling with development setbacks due to globalization and urbanization\, compounded by declining and aging population. The European Commission is outlining a comprehensive vision for the rural regions up to 2040 that involves initiatives like Start-Up Villages. Start-Up villages embraces innovation and entrepreneurship by combining local place and people with external resources and markets to create interdependence ecosystem. This lecture introduces circular bioeconomy start-up villages\, outlining the strategy from the idea to market\, and presents two case-study villages from Cyprus and Lithuania. The main lecture is followed by responses which will cover the start-up concept in the village\, place-based approach to problem solving\, existing initiatives and transformative resilience. This lecture will also highlight the usage of local resources to create new opportunities. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to register for onsite or online participation before 21 October 2024. \n\n\n\nThe lecture is part of the hybrid series Sustainable Energy Innovation Systems for Climate Neutrality. SUMMARY:ESEIA Lecture Series: 10th Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Topic: How to Ensure Sustainable Land-use while enhancing Renewable Energy Production in EuropeGuest lecture by Teresa Ponce de Leão\, LNEGResponse 1: Ignacio Asenjo\, DG Energy\, European CommissionResponse 2: Franz Prettenthaler\, Joanneum Research- LIFEChair: Rupert Baumgartner\, Karl-Franzens University of GrazHost: TU Graz \n\n\n\nEurope is one of the most intensively used landmasses on the globe\, with the highest share of land used for agriculture\, forests and\, to a lesser extent\, urban areas and infrastructure. The way we use this invaluable resource for industry\, food and energy production has significant impacts on biodiversity and human well-being on Earth. The lecture will discuss the EU renaturing strategy along with the climate effects of an increased land-take trend in Europe\, partly caused by increased renewable energy production\, as well as the role of organic soils for storing large quantities of carbon. The lecture will also highlight the importance of long-term soil management on the basis of the EU soil strategy and present land and ecosystem accounting tools. European Commission representatives will give an overview of EU-funded projects in the field of biodiversity and give an idea of what citizen science can do to relieve the pressure on land use. After the presentations\, we will have a panel discussion and then we will discuss with the audience on-site and online. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to register for onsite or online participation before 21 May 2024. \n\n\n\nThe lecture is part of the hybrid series Sustainable Energy Innovation Systems for Climate Neutrality. Please find more information about the ESEIA Lecture Series here. The event is supported by the Styrian Government.

SUMMARY:ESEIA Lecture Series: 9th Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Advanced Tools for Planning and Management of Climate Neutral BuildingsGuest lecture by Carlos Ochoa\, Senior Researcher at the International Energy Research Centre (IERC)\, IrelandResponse 1: Steffen Robbi\, CEO of Digital Findet Stadt GmbHResponse 2: Salvatore Carlucci\, Professor\, Head of the Sustainable Built Environment Group at The Cyprus InstituteChair: Alexander Passer\, Professor of Sustainable Construction at TU GrazHost: Michael Monsberger\, Vice Rector Infrastructure and Sustainability at TU Graz \n\n\n\nMuch care is needed to design\, construct\, and renovate in a climate neutral way ensuring circular economy according to EU Climate laws. Even more so if what is at stake is the overall quality of the building and the comfort and well-being of the people who use it. Building managers and architects are looking for improved building management systems embracing a life-cycle approach\, as well as improved tools for energy management\, environmental performance\, renovation optimization\, and investment planning. The lecture will discuss how to break down climate targets to the building level by reducing grey and operational emissions and which role advanced tools such as Digital Twins and advanced BIM systems can play. The main lecture is followed by a response which will shed light on the effects of digitalization on building value chains\, especially SMEs. \n\n\n\nWe invite you to register for onsite or online participation before 16 April 2024. \n\n\n\nThe lecture is part of the hybrid series Sustainable Energy Innovation Systems for Climate Neutrality. SUMMARY:ESEIA Lecture Series: 8th Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Topic: Smart Integration of Sustainable Mobility Solutions for Urban AreasGuest lecture by Judith O’Meara\, Director EIT Urban Mobility Innovation Hub CentralResponse 1: Mark Perz\, Head of Mobility & Leisure at Holding GrazResponse 2: Martin Hofstetter\, Researcher at the Institute of Automotive Engineering at TU GrazChair: Martin Hofstetter\, Researcher at the Institute of Automotive Engineering at TU GrazHost: Martin Fellendorf\, Professor at the Institute of Highway Engineering and Transport Planning at TU Graz \n\n\n\nOver 50% of the world’s population lives in cities. As cities grow\, so do the mobility challenges: traffic congestion\, increasing GHG emissions\, and inefficient transport systems. Addressing these challenges is a pressing and highly complex task that requires collaboration and innovative approaches from different stakeholders\, including governments\, municipalities\, city councils\, and service providers. Our invited lecturer will delve into this subject\, explaining why we need smart mobility solutions to make cities more sustainable. From electric vehicles to mobility-as-a-service\, she will also discuss how these solutions can revolutionize transportation\, reduce emissions\, and improve overall accessibility and convenience. Following the lecture\, we will hear from two respondents\, who will present the measures already in place and share their perspectives on further opportunities and challenges for reshaping urban mobility in the Austrian City of Graz and the Styrian region. \n\n\n\nRegister before 14 November 2023 to reserve your seat! \n\n\n\nOrganised by ESEIA in cooperation with TU Graz\, the lecture is part of the hybrid series Sustainable Energy Innovation Systems for Climate Neutrality.
